Kentucky Derby officially postponed today

Churchill Downs officials held a news conference this morning to officially announce the postponement of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks races. The races-originally scheduled for May 1st and 2nd – will now be held September 4th for the Oaks and September 5th for the Derby pending the approval of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, who meets on Thursday. It’s the first time the Derby won’t be run the first Saturday of May since 1945.

Meanwhile, the Courier Journal reports NBC is currently in talks to move The Preakness Stakes to September and the Belmont Stakes to early October. If this occurs, the Preakness would be held September 19th and the Belmont would be held October 10th.
