NCAA’s Emmert offers explanation for cancellation of March Madness

On what was supposed to be Selection Sunday for the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, NCAA president Mark Emmert offered an explanation of why March Madness was cancelled.

In an interview with ESPN, Emmert said he was first convinced last Wednesday the tournament could be conducted without fans due to the Coronavirus outbreak. However, things changed when Rudy Gobert of the NBA’s Utah Jazz was the first player to be diagnosed with Corona-19.

He also said lack of testing for players and other essential personnel and decisions made by local and state governments to curtail mass gatherings eventually led to the decision to cancel the tournament.
