Wendell Lynch was sworn in as the 27th mayor of Hopkinsville during a ceremony Sunday afternoon at the War Memorial Building.
Extra chairs had to be brought onto the floor to accommodate the large crowd that gathered to support Lynch, who has represented Ward Six on Hopkinsville City Council since 2014.
Lynch was appointed by council following the resignation of former mayor Carter Hendricks and he’ll serve until a mayor is elected in November. He says he still has to decide if he wants to be on the ballot to serve out the remainder of Hendricks’ term, but he’ll do his very best for however long he’s at city hall.
He hopes to see Hopkinsville become more united, noting its residents have more in common than what divides them.
Lynch says he’ll be relying on counsel and encouragement from the community to be as successful as possible.
The oath of office was administered by his brother, retired Christian County District Judge Arnold Lynch, who said the occasion was especially rewarding to him as he looked back on their time growing up together.
Mayor Lynch thanked his family, friends, members of city council and city employees for their support, saying he will continue to need it going forward.
