HPD celebrating decrease in crime rates, increase in diversity

The Hopkinsville Police Department is celebrating some good news while continuing to strive for lower crime rates and a safer Hopkinsville.

Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner appeared on the WHOP Early Bird Show and says that a combination of good training and community support has really helped the department serve the city to the best of their ability.  He says that violent crime and property crime have decreased over the last five years.

He says that certainly doesn’t mean crime doesn’t exist anymore—just the opposite in fact—but these lower statistics are worth celebrating.

Chief Sumner says the department has faced its shares of struggles over the years, including the issue of retention in light of the pension crisis.

It takes approximately one year to train a new hire and costs around $55,000 to do so.  Chief Sumner says that the men and women of the Hopkinsville Police Department will continue to serve and protect the citizens, despite budget restrictions happening in city government.
