Bill would move Gov. vote to presidential election years

The Kentucky Senate recently approved legislation that would move elections for governor and other constitutional officers to presidential election years and local lawmakers say it would save the state and counties money.

Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County voted for the bill and says not only would eliminating the stand-alone odd-numbered year election come with a cost-savings, it would also increase voter participation.

Similar bills have failed to make it out of the House the last several years, but Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville says he supports it.

The change wouldn’t take effect until 2028, as the legislature cannot lengthen or shorten the term of the current governor.
