Western Kentucky Congressman James Comer and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are praising President Trump for the assassination of an Iranian general Thursday night, while Senator Rand Paul of Bowling Green questions what’s next.

Comer sent a statement to WHOP News Friday morning saying, “I applaud President Trump and our Armed Forces for their bold and courageous action in taking out a brutal terrorist responsible for the bloodshed of hundreds of American citizens in Iraq.”

Leader McConnell urged Senators to learn all of the facts in upcoming classified briefings before making public judgements on the airstrikes and called Qassem Soleimani a “terrorist mastermind” in comments on the Senate floor.

He says he’s “encouraged” by the military action.

Senator Paul tweeted about the execution saying, “President Trump viscerally understands that the toppling of Saddam Hussein made Iran stronger. Soleimani, like Hussein, was an evil man who ordered the killing of Americans. Yet, the question remains, whether his death will lead to more instability in the Middle East or less.”

Paul continues, “The question today is whether the assassination of Soleimani will expand the war to endanger the lives of every American soldier or diplomat in the Middle East? If we are to go to war with Iran the Constitution dictates that we declare war.”

The senator finishes by saying, “A war without a Congressional declaration is a recipe for feckless intermittent eruptions of violence with no clear mission for our soldiers. Our young men and women in the armed services deserve better.”
