Infrastructure, education among legislative priorities for Chambers of Commerce

The local, state and national chambers of commerce outlined some of their priorities for 2020 during a Legislative Update eye opener breakfast Tuesday morning at the Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville.

Kelli Pendleton is the President and CEO of the Christian County Chamber and says they will again push for exempting military pensions from the state’s income tax and for eventual elimination of the income tax overall.

The local chamber is also putting an emphasis on issues related to early childhood education.

Ashli Watts is the new president of the Kentucky Chamber and is asking for the General Assembly to raise the state’s gas tax to bring in additional funding for infrastructure.

The state chamber is also focused on pension reform, tax reform, approving sports wagering and curbing tobacco use, among other items.

Kevin Courtois spoke on behalf of the U.S. Chamber’s Great Lakes Regional Office and says they are pursuing a significant increase in the federal tax on gasoline to address infrastructure needs.

He also listed getting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade approved by Congress as a priority for the weeks and months ahead.
