Citizens of Hopkinsville and Christian County lined the streets in cold temperatures Saturday morning to honor those who have served their country during the annual Veterans Day Parade.
A ceremony followed the parade in front of the Christian County Justice Center, where Mayor Carter Hendricks said Americans should recognize the service of veterans throughout the year.
He presented a special plaque to Colonel Mitch Sartain, who will retire soon after 14 years as Senior Army Officer at Fort Campbell High School.
Lana Bastin of the Military Affairs Committee noted that it has taken the sacrifices of men and women in the military to preserve freedom throughout the history of the United States.
Christian County High School won the JROTC challenge and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School was the winner of the school challenge for bringing the most supporters to the parade.
VFW Post 1913 Commander John Brame reminded the community of their annual ceremony set for 11 a.m. Monday—Veterans Day—at the post near Kroger off of Skyline Drive.
