The City of Hopkinsville is celebrating receiving a new ranking in the National Flood Insurance Program ranking system that results in a 10 percent premium discount on flood insurance on property located in a flood plain.
The City has gone from the rank of Class 10 to Class 8, which Hopkinsville Surface and Storm Water Utility Board Member David Hernandez says is no small feat and comes at the results of numerous efforts to improve flooding conditions in Hopkinsville.
The City has been part of the National Flood Insurance Program for many years, and Hernandez says that has allowed property owners to obtain their own insurance.
He says the increase in ranking will lower flood insurance premiums by 10 percent, which is worth celebrating.
Hernandez says work will continue to improve flooding conditions in the city and hopefully achieve increased rankings that will result in higher discounts. The Community Rating System is a voluntary program and the goal is to reduce flood damages to insurable property, strengthen and support the insurance aspects.
