Congressman Comer talks impeachment, trade, Syria in Guthrie visit

Congressman James Comer made a stop at the American Café in Guthrie Monday morning and addressed the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump and the recent withdraw of troops from Syria.

The Republican from Monroe County says as he’s been traveling the district, he hasn’t heard much support for impeaching President Trump and he doesn’t believe the President has acted in any way to warrant that action.

He believes Speaker Nancy Pelosi was reluctant to proceed with impeachment and that doing so has given her latitude from the more liberal wing of the House to allow a vote on the proposed U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement.

Congressman Comer says he supports withdrawing troops from Syria, but believes President Trump should have used leverage the country possesses to have an agreement in place ahead of time.

He called the attacks by Turkey against the Kurdish people a “bad situation” and believes Congress will pass sanctions against Turkey within the next several days.

Asked about federal funds for improvements on local highways, the congressman says he doesn’t expect an infrastructure bill anytime in the near future due to the divisive political culture right now in Washington.
