Gertrude Combs Stewart, longtime WHOP gospel show contributor, dies

A woman who took countless birthday wishes, prayer requests and church announcements for the Gospel Music Program Sunday mornings on WHOP died Friday morning.

Gertrude Combs Stewart answered the phones for approximately 15 years for the program hosted by her son, Bro. Larry Dale Combs, and gave those announcements each week on the WHOP airwaves until her health no longer allowed about three years ago.

She had previously worked as a clerk at Atkins Dairy and retired as the head city clerk from the City of Hopkinsville in 1993, according to her obituary.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church in Fairview, with burial to follow in Gray Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Hughart, Beard and Giles Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service hour Monday at the church.

Stewart was 88 years old and is survived by her son, two siblings, a grandson and six great-grandchildren.
