“Out of Darkness” suicide prevention walk taking place in Hopkinsville

Hopkinsville is joining a national movement on October 13, where millions of people are participating in ‘Out of Darkness’ suicide prevention walk.

According to a press release, the public is invited to join in the walk—which will have similar walks happening in the communities across the country at the same time—at 2:30 p.m. on October 13 at Virginia Park. This walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide by 20 percent by the year 2025.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, yet it is one of the most preventable deaths in the nation. Last year, these walks raised over $21 million for suicide prevention and the local walk raised over $5,000 and had 100 participants.

A silent auction will be held to assist with fundraising efforts and Kona Ica and DJ’s Famous Lemonade will be on hand for the event.

Board Member Mary Underwood says, “Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by walking we will draw attention to this issue and keep other families from experiencing a suicide loss. Our ultimate goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”
