Gov. Bevin makes road funding announcements, talks pension and election

Governor Matt Bevin announced funding for several local road projects during a visit to Hopkinsville Monday morning and discussed the upcoming election and the state’s pension woes.

He says $550,000 in discretionary funds have been granted to Christian Fiscal Court to resurface Pleasant View Acres Road, North Ridge Drive, three miles of Old Palestine Road beginning at KY 800 and Newton Lane.

The City of Oak Grove is receiving $188,000 for resurfacing work on Van Buren Avenue.

Governor Bevin says road projects should be based on safety concerns and economic development instead of partisan politics.

The governor hit on several topics and told the various local government officials and others in attendance at the Sportsplex that Kentuckians will have a stark contrast in choice between him and Democrat Andy Beshear in the November general election.

He says the General Assembly will have to address comprehensive pension reform next year or see the systems fail in the near future.

Governor Bevin says Kentucky would be more competitive with Tennessee and other bordering states with a consumption-based tax structure, but acknowledged that it would be a several year process to abandon the income tax completely.
