Western Kentucky is no stranger to severe weather, and at Thursday’s Team Kentucky Update, Governor Andy Beshear spotlighted projects that will support the development of 953 rental homes in the region.
Beshear announced that the state is working with the Kentucky Housing Corporation on 11 housing projects worth over $223 million. He says housing developments are underway in Christian, Hopkins, Graves and Warren counties, which were impacted by tornadoes in 2021.
According to the governor’s office, the projects include apartment complexes that will be income-restricted. Rents will be limited to keep units affordable for moderate- and low-income individuals and families. The majority of homes will have 2-3-bedrooms, along with some four-bedroom and single-bedroom homes.
Beshear says a large focus for the housing being developed is affordability. He says the average age at which people become homeowners in the country is 40, and that does not coincide with his idea of the American dream.
According to the Kentucky Housing Corporation, developers in Christian County received $14 million for 56 housing units, and developers in Hopkins County received over $43 million for 120 housing units.
