Voting gets underway for Primary Election, polls open until 6 p.m.

Voting is underway across Kentucky, and things are starting out smooth and steady in Christian County for this Primary Election.

Christian County Clerk Melinda Humphries says things have been a little slow in the morning, but she expects the voter traffic to pick up around lunch time.

Outside of a stray paper jam in one of the machines, it’s been smooth sailing. Humphries says the advantage to having voting centers instead of the traditional voting precinct, is that if a machine goes down, then there are plenty of other machines available for use in the building.

In Kentucky, all you need to vote is your ID, and Humphries reminds that the Commonwealth has a closed primary. What that means is, if you are registered as a Republican, then you’ll only be able to cast your vote for those running as Republican—same applies for if you’re registered as a Democrat.

She says there’s been some confusion on that matter during this election cycle, as while the primary is closed, you can cast a vote for either party during the General Election in November, regardless of your registration.

There are 13 voting centers in Christian County, and you can cast your vote at any of them. They are the James E. Bruce Convention Center, Walnut Street Center, the Senior Citizens Center, the Christian County Courthouse, Indian Hills Elementary, Sinking Fork Baptist Church, Pembroke Baptist, the Crofton Tornado Building, New Palestine Baptist, New Barren Springs Baptist, South Christian Elementary School, the Oak Grove Community Center and the Inspire Early Learning Academy.

In Todd County, citizens can cast their votes at North Todd Elementary, the Todd County Courthouse, Todd County Middle School, Sharon Grove Fire Department, Clifty Fire Department, Todd County High School, Trenton Fire Department, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Guthrie Fire Department and Allegre Volunteer Fire Department.

Over in Trigg County, the voting centers are the Emergency Operations Center, The Way, Trigg County Recreation Complex, South Road Fire Department, East Golden Pond Fire Department, Trigg/Lyon Fire Department and Cerulean Baptist Church.

Don’t forget to get those mail-in absentee ballots in by 6 p.m. which is when the polls officially close on the May primary election.
