The only thing that is going to stop the Christian County Lady Colonels from winning another District 8 Softball Tournament title is consolidation.
The Lady Colonels only needed three innings Tuesday night to dispatch Fort Campbell and claim their 21st straight District 8 title with a 15-0 victory in the last game to be played at Lady Colonel Field.
Jordan Turner tossed a perfect game for the three innings and struck out seven to pick up the pitching win.
Christian County (19-12-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first using two hits and taking advantage of a pair of walks and a couple of Fort Campbell errors.
The Lady Colonels extended their lead to 6-0 in the second inning. The big hit in the frame was a two-run single by Talyn Ezell.
Christian County ended the game with nine runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alison Grant doubled to lead off the inning. After four consecutive walks, Ezell had another two-run double. Alexis Epps added a sacrifice fly and Jayda Turner doubled and came in to score on a two-run homer by Katie Smith.
After two more walks, Alyssa Petterson’s sacrifice fly scored Gracelyn Clark for the final run.
The last game at Lady Colonel Field comes 35 years after Christian County christened the field in a win over Fort Campbell. Christian County Head Coach Sheri Hancock was a shortstop on that team that was coached by Jim Perrin and went on to a 45-0 season and a state slow-pitch state championship.
Hancock said Tuesday’s performance brought everything full circle.
“Tradition, especially Lady Colonel tradition is so important to me,” Hancock said. “The kids went out there tonight and played up to that tradition. They just took care of business.
“As Coach Perrin used to say, it was a very workmanlike performance,” she added.
Hancock said the championship in the last season of Lady Colonels’ softball also was special.
“It’s special to me to coach the last district championship because I have spent most of my life in one way or another working for this program,” Hancock said. “It is very special to me. Life has a way of coming full circle. I love Christian County Lady Colonel softball and the end will be incredibly hard for me.”
The Lady Colonels and Lady Falcons (5-13) both advance to next week’s Region 2 Tournament at Lyon County.
Ezell had five RBI’s for Christian County on Tuesday with a pair of doubles.Chloe Almy also had a pair of hits.
After the game, the All-District 8 Team was announced.
