KHSAA approves grid alignment, flag football, pickleball

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control finalized the football alignment for the 2027-28 season on Wednesday.

The Class 6A, District 1 will include the Christian County Tigers, McCracken County, Henderson County, and Daviess County.

Christian County Tigers Head Football Coach Dustin Lopez said the district, “will be competitive but the good thing is it’s all teams we will be familiar with.”

The board also approved using the RPI in the second round of the playoffs.

Lopez said, “that will throw some interesting matchups out and makes the regular season really important because you automatically won’t get two home playoff games for winning the district.”

Another district important to local fans is Class 2-A, District 1 where Todd County Central, Trigg County, Fort Campbell, and Caldwell County will compete against Mayfield.

The KHSAA also approved by a 15-2 vote on Wednesday to sanction girls’ flag football starting in the 2027-28 season.

Lopez said flag football for girls will give athletes another opportunity to showcase their skills on the field. Flag football already is being played in Tennessee and Indiana and has proved to be successful.

Flag football will be a spring sport.

In another vote by the KHSAA on Wednesday, pickleball also will begin play across the state in 2027-28.

According to a story in the Lexington Herald Leader, nearly half the respondents and a third of the KHSAA’s membership expressed interest in the sanctioning of pickleball during the latest triennial survey that weighs the addition of new sports and sport-activities. Of the 214 survey-question respondents, 102 voted “yes” for a state pickleball tournament beginning in either the 2027-28 or 2028-29 school year.
