A pair of Christian County High School athletes signed letters-of-intent to play college football during a ceremony Thursday afternoon in front of friends, family, and teammates in the school’s media center.
Wide receiver Zyon Wharton will play next season for Lindsey Wilson University in Columbia.
The 6-foot-4, 190-pound receiver led the Colonels with 33 receptions for 487 yards and four touchdowns last season.
Wharton said he is blessed to have the opportunity to compete at the next level.
Wharton who finished his career with more than 1,000 all-purpose yards for the Colonels, is expected to play wide receiver for the Blue Raiders. He said he knew he wanted to play for the team after meeting the coaches and seeing the school.
Josh Bridges took a different route to sign with Kentucky Wesleyan College. After playing several seasons with Christian County, Bridges transferred to Murray High School for his senior season.
Bridges said he knew some of the Murray players and wanted to go where he was challenged.
The 6-foot, 175-pound receiver caught 54 passes for 905 yards and nine touchdowns during his senior year at Murray. He also rushed for three scores while leading the Tigers to the Class 3-A state title game.
Bridges transferred back to Christian County at the Christmas break and is now a member of the Colonels’ basketball team.
For his career, Bridges caught 127 passes for 2,605 yards and 27 touchdowns.
He said he was excited about the opportunity to further his education and continue to play football.
Bridges said he plans on majoring in Education and would like to get into coaching after college.
Wharton said he is undecided on his college major.
