Stephenson powers Colonels past Muhlenberg

The Christian County Colonels got 28 points from junior center Rahsean Stevenson and defeated visiting Muhlenberg County 74-65 Tuesday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.

After giving up the opening bucket, the Colonels went on an 11-2 run and led 18-17 after one quarter.

Behind the strong play of Austin Saye and Gavin Groves, the Mustangs battled back to take a six-point lead in the second quarter.

However, Darren Bigbee hit a pair of three-pointers and Jay Henderson and Stafford Winston also hit long-range shots to rally the Colonels, who took a 38-37 halftime lead.

Christian County (8-11) went on a 10-0 run out of the break fueled by Stephenson. Frank Pollard Jr. also had a big third quarter and the Colonels pushed their lead to 56-46 entering the final period.

Christian County enjoyed its largest lead of 13 points with 4:46 to play and then survived a comeback attempt fueled by Muhlenberg’s star freshman guard Ivan Sparks.

Stevenson hit some late free throws to seal the win for the Colonels.

Henderson had 13 points and Bigbee added 10 for Christian County.

Sparks led the Mustangs (14-10) with 15 points and Groves had 14.

The Colonels are scheduled to play host to Fort Campbell in a girls’/boys’ District 8 doubleheader tonight. The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m. with airtime at 5:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.
