Vehicle pursuit ends in fatality on I-69

An investigation is underway after a vehicular pursuit ended in the death of the driver on Interstate 69 in Hopkins County Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Madisonville Police Department, law enforcement responded to complaints of a reckless driver on I-69 and they located the suspect’s vehicle near Exit 114 and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver allegedly fled instead, before coming to a complete stop a short distance away.

That’s when officers reportedly heard a gunshot and called for backup, shutting down the roadway for some time for public safety. Once it was confirmed safe, officers secured the scene and located the driver, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation remains underway, and the name of those involved have not yet been released.
