Local animal shelter receives 25 dogs connected to Todd County cruelty case

The Christian County Animal Shelter is busy after receiving 25 dogs connected to an animal cruelty case in Todd County. Now, staff are processing them so that they can one day find their forever homes.

Shelter Director Melissa Goff says they received 25 Cane Corso mixed dogs on Tuesday afternoon and began getting them vaccinated and medicated so that they can be fostered or adopted. Goff says the dogs were abandoned by the owners; they were left in wired crates inside a home with no electricity at the time.

Currently, 19 of the dogs have been processed, and Goff says they are waiting for the others to become more comfortable and less fearful of the staff.

When the shelter was contacted concerning the dogs, Goff says they only had eight open kennels, so they asked community members to foster some of their current shelter dogs to create more space. She says folks stepped up, and they were able to create enough space for the incoming dogs.

Community members have reached out to the shelter on social media to see how they can help them take care of these dogs, and Goff calls the support heartwarming. She says people have asked about donating items and helping get the dogs more comfortable with being around people.

Goff says those wanting to support the shelter can foster a pet and donate funds or supplies such as animal food and treats, toys, cleaning items and kennels.

The dogs are currently on a five-day hold, but folks and rescue agencies interested in fostering them can sign up to do so. The shelter is located at 2935 Russellville Road, and staff can be contacted at 270-887-4175.
