Hopkinsville house receives national historic recognition

The Dr. Bankie and Mamie Moore House was constructed on East 4th Street between 1917 and 1920, and the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County announced that the house has been recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

According to a news release from the museums, Bankie Moore was a native of Christian County who graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville and was among the earliest Black doctors to practice locally. Then, Mamie Moore trained at Perry Sanitarium in Kansas City, Missouri, to become a nurse and later worked with her husband.

Bankie Moore would go on to have a 40-year career as a physician and surgeon. Museums Executive Director Alissa Keller says the house represents the legacy of a prolific doctor, a trailblazer in local health care and a dedicated community member.

The house is currently owned by John Banks Jr., who has been working to restore it over the past few years, saving it from being demolished.
