Henderson rallies past CCHS into region volleyball title game

For the Christian County Lady Colonels’ volleyball team, it was the end of the line on Wednesday night in the Region 2 Volleyball Tournament semifinals.

Henderson County advanced to the regional finals with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Christian County in the first semifinal of the night in Morton’s Gap.

Christian County rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the first set behind the serving and net play of senior Katie Cansler. Henderson still led 24-22, but Cansler and Taylor Cantrell had back-to-back kills and Christian County rode the momentum to a 26-24 win.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the second set before Henderson closed on an 11-4 run to win 25-18.

Henderson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set only to see Christian County come back to take an 8-6 advantage. The set was tied five times after that until Kiley Lambert’s kill pushed Christian County to an 18-16 advantage. Cansler had an ace and Jazzy Tejada had a kill as part of a big run and Christian County won 25-19.

However, Henderson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set and this time didn’t let up, leading the entire set on the way to a 25-13 win.

In the fifth and deciding set, the teams were tied five times, the last time at 12-12.

Henderson was able to take three of the last four points to take the match 15-13.

Cansler had 13 kills and Lambert had eight kills to lead Christian County, although those statistics are unofficial.

The loss ended the Christian County Lady Colonels volleyball program. The school will consolidate with Hopkinsville next season. The Lady Colonels’ final record this season was 20-17.

Henderson advances to tonight’s championship match against Heritage Christian Academy. The Lady Warriors knocked off Webster County 3-1.

The title match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
