Rain looks to loosen drought’s hold, with multiple chances this week

It would seem our drought conditions might just meet their end this week, with multiple chances of rain possible and cooler temperatures in the forecast.

After weeks of little to no rain across the region, Meteorologist Kate Hickford with the National Weather Service in Paducah says that streak of dry weather looks to come to a close—in fact, many places have already received a good rain shower as of Monday morning. She says there will be rain in the area through at least Thursday, before drying out in time for the weekend, and most of the area should see around two inches of rain.

She says that will really help with our drought conditions, hopefully bringing conditions back from the ‘extreme’ designation into just the ‘abnormally dry’ one.

Hickford says with temperatures lingering in the 70’s and maybe touching 80 degrees at times, it’s actually going to feel like fall time—a departure from an extended period of temperatures in the 90’s.

In the 8-to-14-day outlook however, it looks like above average temperatures could return, as will our below average chances for rain.

As hot and cold temperatures begin to battle it out with the changing of the seasons, that does mean we will be entering our fall severe weather season, with Hickford telling people to go ahead and prepare now for any possible fall-time severe weather that could crop up.
