Colonels to introduce newest Athletics Hall of Fame Class on Friday

Christian County High School officials are preparing to induct their newest Athletic Hall of Fame class Friday night at the Stadium of Champions.

A reception for the new class is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Stadium of Champions for the new class and their guests.

Here are this year’s CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025:

Arvel Banks: A 1989 graduate, Banks was a member of the 1988 state champion wrestling team. Banks also claimed an individual state championship in 1989 in the 140-pound weight class. He finished the season with a 36-3 record.

Kayce Fields Brown: A 1997 graduate, shew as a four-year member of the Lady Colonels’ softball team. Kayce was on the 1994 KHSAA State Slow-Pitch state championship team and the 1996 KHSAA State Fast-Pitch state championship team. Kayce pitched a five-hitter in the 1996 championship game win over Ryle and added a pair of hits in the 9-1 victory. She finished the 1996 season with a 0.86 ERA while also leading the team with 37 RBI.

Brett Duncan: A 1995 graduate, Brett is the fourth all-time winningest pitcher in school history with 26 victories. He is third all-time in strikeouts (247) and also was a top-10 offensive performer with 85 career RBI and a career batting average of .341. He went on to play for Dallas Baptist and pitched in the NAIA World Series.

Anthony Hickey Jr.: A 2011 graduate, Hickey was named Kentucky Mr. Basketball after leading the Colonels to their only KHSAA Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament title while earning Sweet 16 MVP in 2011. He also was named the Kentucky Associated Press Player of the Year averaging 18 points, 4.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and four steals. He went on to play college basketball at LSU and Oklahoma State. He has been playing professionally overseas since 2015. Hickey Jr., was named the Italy A2 League MVP for the 2024-25 season.

Tammy Hancock Hightower: A 1996 graduate, shew as a six-year letterman in softball and golf. Tammy was a member of the 1994 KHSAA State Slow-Pitch state championship softball team and the 1996 KHSAA State Fast-Pitch state softball championship team. She picked up three wins in the 1996 state softball tournament including a three-hitter in the semifinal win over Daviess County. She continued her softball and golf career at Campbellsville University.

Jimmy Doc Johnson: He was a contributor to the athletic teams, especially football, serving as the team trainer at CCHS from 1972-83. Coach Dan Goble says one of the best connections he made in his first week on the job at CCHS was meeting Jimmy Johnson.

Griffin Joiner: A 2011 graduate, Joiner was voted Kentucky Miss Softball and Gatorade Player of the Year in 2011. She earned All-State softball honors numerous times and was Salutatorian of her graduating class. Joiner has the record for single season batting average (.654), career highest average (.497), and most RBI in a season (66). She went on to play for the University of Kentucky where she was named All-SEC and led the Wildcats to the 2014 College World Series. She went on to play professionally with the Akron Racers and currently coaches for the University of Louisville.

Derrica Jones: A 2002 graduate, Jones was a standout in both basketball and track. She helped the Lady Colonels basketball to 107 wins during her four-year career. She was named to the Kentucky All-Star team her senior season. Jones also was a state champion in the discus throw in 2002 and still holds the school record of 121, 9 inches. She went on to play college basketball at Southeast Illinois College and finished her career at Murray State.

Darren Parker: A 1988 graduate, Parker wrestled to a 30-win season in 1987 and 1988. In the 1987 campaign, Parker finished third in the district and regional tournaments and fifth in the state tournament. In 1988, Parker finished second in the district and region tournaments, but won the 152-pound division at the state tournament. He was part of the 1987 state runner-up team and the 1988 state champion team.

Mike Pyle: A 1965 graduate, Pyle served as the Colonels’ football trainer from 1976-98. Pyle also was a lineman and linebacker in the early 1960’s Colonels’ team and received the first Dennis Wiley Award for outstanding lineman.

Maxie Stamps: A 2000 graduate, Stamps was an All-Region player in 1999 and 2000 and led the team in scoring in his senior year at 19.8 points and rebounding with 10.5 rebounds per game. He went on to play collegiately at Three Rivers Community College and finished his career at Drury University where he was All-Conference in 2002.

Dr. William Sweet: Nominated by Hall of Fame Coach Dan Goble, Sweet served many years as the football team’s doctor beginning in 1992. Dr. Sweet founded the St. Luke’s Free Clinic in Hopkinsville.

Keith Tandy: A 2007 graduate, Tandy left Christian County as the career football leader in passing yards (8,609) and 90 touchdowns. He holds the school record with 528 yards and eight touchdowns in a single game. Tandy also starred in basketball and baseball and was a member of the school’s 2004 state championship baseball team. He went on to play college football at West Virginia and led the Big East in interceptions. Tandy was selected twice to the All Big East Team and was voted Second Team All American. He was drafted in the sixth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played six NFL seasons with the Bucs and one with the Atlanta Falcons. He is currently a special teams coach with the Buccaneers.

1996 State Champion Softball Team: Led by Hall of Fame coach Jim Perrin and assistants Sheri Jones Hancock, Alicia Lancaster, and Mike Harbold, the team made history by winning the first KHSAA Fast-Pitch State Championship in their first year playing fast-pitch. The team went 26-7 and won nine straight postseason games. The Lady Colonels defeated Louisville Assumption (6-5), South Oldham (15-1), Russell (5-3), Daviess County (13-1), and Ryle (9-1) to win the state title.

In addition to the introduction of the newest class, Hickey Jr., and Joiner will have their jersey numbers retired.

Football player VaShun Banks was originally scheduled to be inducted into this class, but a work obligation kept him from being able to attend. Banks will be included in the next class, which will be announced later this year.

The Colonels’ football game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Airtime for Friday’s game is set for 6:30 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.
