Murray State Alumna Kara Dowdy named Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award Winner

A Murray State University graduate is being recognized as one of the top teachers in the state. Kara Dowdy, an English teacher at Mayfield High School, has been selected as one of nine recipients of the 2026 Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Dowdy earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary English education in 2004, her master’s degree in reading and writing in 2008 and just this past spring she completed an education specialist degree in educational administration and instructional supervision.

Chosen from more than 750 nominations across Kentucky, Dowdy says she was shocked but excited when she learned the news. According to Murray State University, her colleagues, students and community members quickly joined in the celebration, sharing the achievement on social media and even surprising her with gifts.

Beyond the classroom, Dowdy serves as English department chair, mentors other teachers and has organized efforts like the “Different Abilities” fundraiser, which supports students with special needs.

Dowdy says teaching is more than just a career, it’s part of who she is. She says she is a teacher every single second of every single day and that her goal has always been to help others—her sons, students and colleagues—reach their full potential.

Looking ahead, Dowdy is now in the running for the title of 2026 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in October.
