Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell has already made it clear that his priorities are strengthening national defense and foreign policy during his last two years in office, but he is also working to ensure the state retains its farmland.
During his Thursday appearance in Hopkinsville, McConnell shared that Eddie Melton, the president of the Kentucky Farm Bureau, contacted him concerning the loss of farmland across the state with the hope of slowing down or reversing that loss. McConnell says Kentucky has over 70,000 farms, but land that was once used for agriculture now sits empty.
To combat this issue, McConnell says he added a policy to President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill which was passed into law in July. McConnell says the policy allows those who purchase farmland and commit to using it for agriculture for the next 10 years to receive a tax incentive.
McConnell’s term concludes in 2027.
