Tigers football team to face Mayfield, Murray in final scrimmage

The Hopkinsville Tigers football team will travel to Mayfield for its second and final scrimmage of the preseason tonight.

The Tigers will face one of the top teams in Class 2-A, the Mayfield Cardinals in a two-quarter varsity scrimmage. Hoptown also will play one of the top Class 3-A teams in western Kentucky, the Murray Tigers, in a two-quarter varsity scrimmage.

Hopkinsville scrimmaged defending Class 4-A state champion Paducah Tilghman last weekend and lost 21-0 in a two-quarter scrimmage. They also routed Clarksville Northeast 28-7 in a 30-minute varsity scrimmage.

Hoptown Head Coach Dustin Lopez said his team needs to improve on tackling tonight.

Lopez said he had several players out tonight in the secondary and his biggest concern as the season approaches is depth at linebacker.

The Hoptown coach added that he is also concerned with special teams play since they have not been live and will not be live until the regular season games begin.

He added that his team and coaches are beginning to sense that the 2025 season is getting close to kicking off.

The Tigers open their final season before next year’s consolidation with Christian County High School on Aug. 22 at home against Nashville Stratford.
