Salvation Army of Hopkinsville expands shelter, center hours during ongoing heatwave

Due to ongoing heat advisories in the region, the Salvation Army of Hopkinsville will have its residential shelter open 24 hours a day starting Thursday.

The extended hours will be around the clock for the next two weeks, according to a news release, to provide relief and escape from extreme hot temperatures and humidity to those most in need the community. Those seeking shelter will be able to stay inside, while receiving water, food and support services—all at making sure no one is left exposed during the hottest temperatures.

Along with the 24/7 opening of the residential shelter, the Life Navigation Center at 310 East Seventh Street will extend its weekday hours and remain open until 6:00 PM for the next two weeks. Anyone in need of water, cooling, or a brief escape from the sun is welcome to stop by—even if they are not staying in the shelter.

Let. David Donegan says, “We know the rising heat is a serious threat to our most vulnerable neighbors, especially families with children, seniors, and those without consistent housing. While the cost of operating the shelter 24/7 is not currently accounted for in our budget, we know without a doubt that God will make a way. The needs of our community come first.”
