Representative Myron Dossett spoke recently at the Interim Joint Committee of Transportation and expressed his concerns regarding the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Medical Review Board and its handling of the issuance of driver’s licenses.
According to a news release, Representative Dossett says he’s heard from numerous individuals that have had struggles with getting their licenses reinstated following vehicular accidents. He says, “Over the last two years, five individuals from Christian County have contacted me about their driver’s license being revoked due to a recent automobile accident. They were asked to go through a series of tests conducted by their physician. Each of them complied, ultimately getting their license back. In their experience, they had to jump through a lot of hoops taking almost six months.”
Those individuals reportedly told Dossett they had complete a long list of tests, including but not limited to, optometrist or ophthalmologist for field test and range test, family or primary care physician, cardiologist, and a neurologist for electroencephalogram.
Representative Dossett says he’s closely watching the implementation of Senate Bill 43, which is designed to improve of eliminate issues with the medical review board as they evaluate a person’s ability to drive due to a physical or mental disability, outlines membership requirements, and establishes guidelines for the evaluation and disposition of cases.
Additionally, this measure allows eligible and approved third-party entities to issue driver’s license renewals.
