KYTC says don’t be fooled by fraudulent text messages

It’s a familiar song and dance now as scammers continue to find new ways to try and pull one over on the citizens, but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is putting out the warning on a continuing text message scam.

You’ve undoubtedly seen one before—the text message accuses the individual of having unpaid traffic tickets and says that a “DMV violation” will be reported and that “driving privileges” will be suspended if payment is not sent in immediately.  There’s a lot of red flags in that message, but the main one is the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would never collect traffic ticket fees using texts messages.

Others include the fact that KYTC does not refer to themselves as KDOT or the DMV in official communications, and make sure to double check that website link, as the official one is drive.ky.gov.

If you receive one of these scam texts, do not click on that link, and if you did provide any personal information, contact your bank immediately. When in doubt, feel free to contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet directly, just to make sure everything is authentic.
