It’s official—the City of Clarksville has finalized the purchasing of the Clarksville Speedway site, with the goal of transforming it into a large recreation complex for north Clarksville.
According to a news release, negotiations have been underway for sometime with Speedway owner William Scogin, with the ordinance to purchase the property first being passed by Clarksville City Council is February of 2024.
The area is made of 83 acres of space that could house any number of recreational facilities and programs, including the possibility of an indoor aquatic center, a fitness center, multi-use fields, accessible playgrounds, an alternate canoe access point and much more—all to be determined at a later date.
The purchase price for the 83 acres is $7 million, which includes the right-of-way for the road. The purchase also makes way for the completion of Needmore Road widening work and improvements.
In 2019, the City Council created a capital project for the purchase of land for a Regional Recreation Center, with North Clarksville’s need being principally addressed. That capital project is currently funded in the amount of $8.5 million.
