Don’t look now, but the Hoptown Hoppers are one of the hottest teams in the Ohio Valley League.
The Hoppers won their third game in four outings by defeating the Paducah Chiefs 5-2 on Sunday night.
Former Hopkinsvillle High School star Gavin Powell and Gabe Eddington both had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Hoppers, who improved to 6-11 on the season.
After an 0-7 start, Hoptown is now just a half-game out of fourth place in the standings with third-place Fulton coming to Colonel Field tonight at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Hoppers scored a run in the top of the second inning when Powell singled home Chance Sweeney.
The score held until the fifth when the Chiefs tied the game at 1-1. The Chiefs took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
However, the Hoppers responded with four runs in the top of the seventh. Eddington had a two-run double and Powell added a run-scoring double for a 4-2 advantage. Powell made it 5-2 when he scored on a single by Grady Broughton.
Cody Jones had another good outing on the mound for the Hoppers. The right-hander from the University of Indianapolis earned the win, going seven innings and striking out eight while allowing only two hits.
Former Hopkinsville High School star Jacob Dilday pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Former Trigg County High School star Aidon Butts also had one of the Hoppers’ seven hits on the night.
