Extended heatwave starts this weekend, will linger into next week

A Heat Advisory starts in western Kentucky today, and the high temperatures and high humidity will combine to feel downright awful outside for the next several days.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says heat index values are set to top 100 degrees across the region, with some places possibly seeing heat index values of 108, creeping towards 110 degrees. Low temperatures will just barely dip into the 70’s at night, which won’t bring much relief to the heat.

Those temperatures can quickly become dangerous, so Christian County Emergency Management is reminding people to stay hydrated-in fact, if you must be outdoors for any length of time, drink more water than you think you might need.

Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing, and make sure to take frequent breaks in air-conditioning, away from the sun. Stay aware of heat related illness symptoms, such as trembling, excessive sweating, headache, dizziness and nausea. If you feel any of those symptoms, get to a cooler location quickly before heat exhaustion becomes the dangerous heat stroke.

Never leave a pet or a child in a hot car for any length of time, as temperatures inside a non-running vehicle can rapidly become deadly.
