One soldier killed, another injured in helicopter training incident at Fort Campbell

An incident during helicopter training in the Fort Campbell area has resulted in the death of one soldier and the injuring of another.

Not much information was immediately available, but officials with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell says it happened at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday night in the Fort Campbell training area during an ‘aviation incident’.

One soldier was confirmed deceased at the scene, while another was rushed to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, where they are in stable condition.

The names of those involved have not yet been released. The incident remains under investigation.

Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam says both Christian and Montgomery County Governments are on stand-by to help Fort Campbell and the 101st however they can, saying their hearts go out to the family of the victim and prayers for a speedy recovery for the injured.

Judge Gilliam says this drives home the point that soldiers can make the ultimate sacrifice in service not just in combat–but sometimes right here at home.

From the City of Oak Grove: “Yesterday, we tragically lost a brave soldier in a helicopter crash at Fort Campbell. Our hearts go out to the family, unit, and friends of the fallen hero during this incredibly difficult time. Please join us in honoring their service and sacrifice.

Additionally, we are keeping the soldier who is currently in stable condition in our thoughts and prayers.

Together, as a community, let us offer our support and solidarity to those affected by this loss.”

Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight released a statement:

The following is a statement from Sen. Craig Richardson, R-Hopkinsville, regarding the June 11 training incident at Fort Campbell that claimed the life of one soldier and injured another.

“The news from Fort Campbell last night is heartbreaking. One of our nation’s soldiers has lost their life, and another is recovering from injuries sustained in a tragic helicopter incident. Our commonwealth grieves alongside the families, the Fort Campbell community, and the broader Army family.

“This soldier is mourned not just by Kentucky, but by a nation that owes its freedom to the selfless service of men and women like them. We pray for healing for the injured and strength for every service member and loved one facing the weight of this loss.

“This tragedy is a solemn reminder that the dangers our military faces are not limited to distant battlefields. The call to serve brings risks at home, in training, preparation, and quiet readiness.

“To the soldiers at Fort Campbell and across our armed forces—know that we see your sacrifice and stand with you. Kentucky is proud to be home to heroes. Today, we honor one of them.”
