The Alhambra Theatre is a longstanding local venue for concerts, plays, musicals and much more and on Wednesday the community is celebrating the theatre’s 97th birthday.
The theatre opened in 1928 and is named after the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. A showing of the 1926 film, “Don Juan” was the first movie to be shown at the theatre.
To celebrate the anniversary, Pennyroyal Arts Council Executive Director Margaret Prim is inviting folks to visit the theater where they can get a tour.
To ensure the longevity the theatre, Prim says they are planning on making audio upgrades and says it will create a better listening experience for patrons.
The theatre is just three years shy of celebrating its centennial and Prim says they are already brainstorming celebration ideas. She says they are hoping to start some legacy and endowment programs to ensure that the theatre continues to remain in the community.
Starting in June, Prim says they are partnering with the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library to host free movies for kids and adults. The movies kick-off on June 17 with a showing of “A Goofy Movie” at 10:30 a.m. and “Grease” at 6:30 p.m.
Movies will be shown each Tuesday until July 8 and then will resume in the Holiday season for Halloween and winter movies. The full schedule is below.
