Hoptown track teams earn runner-up finishes at region meet

The Hopkinsville High School track teams took runner-up finishes in the Class 2-A, Region 1 Meet on Monday evening at Calloway County High School.

In the girls’ meet, the Lady Tigers finished second to Calloway County. The Lady Lakers had 239 points and Hopkinsville finished with 80.

Grace Cansler defended her region championship in the 400-meter dash as she broke the tape in 1:01.97.

Alexis Herrera-Lovato earned a state bid with a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run. The Lady Tigers’ junior finished four seconds out of first place with a time of 2:33.03.

Hopkinsville’s 400-meter relay team of Cansler, Alicia Davis, Herrera-Lovato, and Kaniya Jackson Grundy took runner up and qualified for the state meet with a time of 4:27.14.

In the boys’ meet, Paducah Tilghman scored 188 points and Hopkinsville was second with 106 points.

The Tigers were led by sophomore Keyshun Teal, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.22 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 43.07 seconds. Elijah Reid also qualified for the state meet by taking second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.12 seconds.

The boys’ 100-meter relay team earned a bid to the state meet and finished runner-up with a time of 44.57, less than a second out of first. The team includes Teal, Treston Kay, Reid, and James Bradley.

The 200-meter relay team also qualified for state with a runner-up finish. The team of Teal, Kay, Bradley, and Jaylen Ray finished in 1:34.57, just missing a region title by four seconds.
