Around 8,000 boots have been lined up on the lawn in front of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters for one last time to honor active-duty soldiers who have died since September 11, 2001.
In an announcement in April, Fort Campbell personnel shared that they are ending the display to transition to the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a place where families can remember and honor their fallen service members year-round. Fort Campbell has hosted the memorial for the past 11 years.
During this year’s display, family members of fallen service members or a designee are invited to take the boot and the memorabilia with them. The boots will be on display until Monday, May 26.
