Hoptown back at .500 after loss to Muhlenberg

Muhlenberg County scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the second inning and held off visiting Hopkinsville 5-1 Tuesday night in a high school baseball game.

Hoptown (12-12) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Gavin Powell scored on error.

But the Mustangs had three straight singles to start the bottom of the second. A Tigers’ error and another single gave Muhlenberg a 3-1 advantage. The lead grew to 5-1 after a passed ball and a ground out.

The Tigers, who have lost four of their last five games, didn’t threaten much after the opening inning.

Andrew Mayes suffered the loss, giving up only four hits and striking out five through six innings.

Gavin Mitchell, Chase Fort, Jayden Kellum, and Layton Lindsey all had hits for Hoptown, which is scheduled to play Thursday at Apollo.
