Colonels shut out Tigers to grab top spot in district standings

The once confusing District 8 baseball standings just got a lot clearer.

Layton Creamer drove in a pair of runs and Eddie Davis and Nolan Young combined to toss a four-hitter and Christian County defeated visiting Hopkinsville 6-0 Friday night in a District 8 baseball game.

The win gives the Colonels the No. 1 seed with a 7-1 record. Hopkinsville, which could have forced a likely three-way tie for first place with a win, falls to third in the district standings at 5-3. University Heights Academy, which has district games with fifth seed Heritage Christian Academy and fourth seed Fort Campbell remaining, is now in second place in the district standings at 4-2.

Christian County (14-11) wasted little time doing its offensive damage. The Colonels scored three runs in the first inning using three hits. Blake Boehman had an RBI single that nearly decapitated Hoptown second baseman Chase Fort. Later, Creamer hit a two-run single that scored Gage Montes and Boehman.

The Colonels pushed their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning as Thad Tolliver reached on an error and stole second base. He came in to score on a single by Sebastian Dazey.

Hoptown pitcher Gavin Powell retired five of the next six Christian County batters, but in the fourth inning Aiden Lewis had a two-out single. Dazey’s double scored Lewis to make it 5-0. Powell pitched well for the Tigers (12-11), going six innings and striking out three while scattering nine hits.

The Colonels’ final run came in the sixth inning as Tolliver doubled and scored when Lewis hit into a fielder’s choice.

Davis started the game and went two innings, striking out three. Young relieved Davis in the third and went the next five innings, allowing only two hits while striking out two batters.

Aiden Lewis, who graduated Friday morning from Hopkinsville Community College with an Associate Degree as part of the Dual Credit Program, went 2-for-3. Dazey was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Powell had a double to pace the Tigers.

Christian County is scheduled to play host to Trigg County on Tuesday night. Hopkinsville is back in action Tuesday at Muhlenberg County.
