Flood recovery efforts continue across Christian County in the week following historic levels of flooding, where over a foot of rain fell in a period of three days.
While a good portion of the flood waters have receded, that’s not the case for every neighborhood, and many people in Hopkinsville, Oak Grove and parts of the county are still struggling with flooded households and impassable roadways. Appearing on WHOP Friday, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight says the Cavalcade Circle and Windmill Farms area remain impacted, and they’re trying to find a solution.
He says numerous roads throughout the county remain impassable, and while he knows people are growing tired of the wait, he urges that they keep safety a top priority.
Mayor Knight says Christian County Emergency Management will be hosting two flood recovery resource events on Saturday—one at the Christian County Justice Center and the other at the Oak Grove Community Center—at 11 a.m. Attendees will receive a free lunch, along with receiving recovery information and pick up available cleaning supplies.
In addition to the resource fair, community volunteers are invited to gather at the Christian County Justice Center beginning at 8:00 AM to help clean up flood-affected neighborhoods. Volunteers will be assigned to areas in need of physical assistance with debris and cleanup.
Mayor Knight says he’s been truly wowed by this community, and the people in it that are driven to help their neighbors in a time of need.
