Spring break is fast approaching and to close out the week, first graders across Christian County were invited to the annual 4-H Farm Day on Wednesday.
Farm Day is hosted at Garnett Farm and is sponsored by the Christian County Extension Office. The event is volunteer led by agriculture students from Hopkinsville and Christian County High Schools and the Christian County 4-H.
The first graders churned butter, milked and sheared fake livestock, picked apples and sold produce, all while asking questions and learning about agriculture.
Cameron Williams, the vice president elect of the Christian County High School FFA, says the event is truly a group effort. He adds that the FFA members have led discussions on an array of topics like tractors, horses, animal husbandry, the farmers market, and the well known Farm Day butter.
The FFA members gained knowledge of the topics through agriculture classes taken at their respective high schools.
Brant Cansler, another member of the Christian County FFA chapter, says Farm Day is a time for the extension office to spotlight the fundamentals of agriculture and show young students agriculture exists beyond the farm.
Williams also adds, if the students take away just one thing from the event, he considers it a success. He says Farm Day is a crucial part of agriculture education for the county, given the huge agriculture influence in the area.
This is just the first day of the event, and the group will be back Thursday, ready to teach more students about agriculture in the county.
