Avian Influenza found in several Ky. counties, including Hopkins, Muhlenberg

Cases of the highly-pathogenic Avian Influenza has been identified in several Kentucky counties, including Hopkins and Muhlenberg. 

According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, regional labs of giving preliminary positives to cases in Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties, but also Ballard, Fulton and Henderson counties in western Kentucky.  Other Kentucky counties with confirmed positives include Jefferson, Franklin, Kenton, Rowan and Wayne.

There are testing pending in Logan, Calloway, Warren and Barren counties.

The Avian Flu has proven to be widespread in wild birds through the United States, causing outbreaks in commercial and backyard flocks—leading to shortages in the egg and poultry industries.

The risk of infection in the human population remains low.

The public is asked to report any sick or dead wild birds to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, especially if they’re exhibiting symptoms such as swimming circles, unwillingness to fly, head tremors, in-coordination and lethargy.
