As illnesses such as the flu, strep throat, the stomach bug and even more race their way through the Commonwealth, local schools are battling to keep kids healthy and schools open.
Several local schools have already experienced closures due to illness, such as Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Schools and Heritage Christian Academy, but Christian County Public Schools have managed to stay open so far. Speaking with WHOP Tuesday morning, Superintendent Chris Bentzel says they’re keeping a close eye both student and staff attendance numbers, and they’ll make determinations on school closures as needed, but Bentzel says they’re determined to stay open.
He says one thing the COVID-19 pandemic did prepare them for its how to manage illnesses in the school buildings, and he encouraged students and parents to uphold those familiar practices of frequent handwashing, and taking students to the doctor if they’re sick.
The superintendent says they’re trying to improve what resources they offer to parents, and about 100 parents and guardians attended a parent informational summit over the weekend that offered attendees a chance to learn about mental health, teen vaping, school rules and much more.
Parents should also keep in mind that CCPS will have an early-release day on Friday, with elementary schools dismissing at 12 p.m. and middle and high schools dismissing at 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided to all students before they are dismissed for the day.
