The 2nd Region Pennyrile Umpires Association is facing a shortage of umpires for the upcoming high school baseball season.
Matt Bell, the Assigning Secretary of the 2nd Region Pennyrile Umpires Association, said a meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins County Central High School in hopes of recruiting some new umpires for the 2025 season.
Currently, Bell said there are 19 umpires who are registered to work Region 2, but he needs 32. And, of the 19, some of those are not full-time and can only work weekends or other special times.
Bell, who was a guest on Monday’s Early Bird Show, said he hopes to recruit some umpires from Christian County.
Bell said he also would like to have some younger umpires to join the organization.
Umpires can pick the days they want to umpire, set travel limits, and work games within the 2nd region. Umpires are paid $85 per Varsity game and $135 for a JV/Varsity doubleheader.
Bell said getting started is easy.
At Wednesday night’s meeting, Bell said Region 2 coaches also will be in attendance and both the umpires and coaches will get to know one another and discuss the upcoming season.
