The Christian County Public School System’s second annual Career Expo took over the Bruce Convention Center on Wednesday and gave high school freshmen a chance to explore a wide array of career paths.
This year’s expo included around 63 business, industry and post-secondary education exhibitors. The exhibits were organized in zones based on career fields. The zones included agriculture and skilled trades; engineering, manufacturing and business and health and community services.
CCPS Student Transition Coordinator, Sandra Hancock organized this year’s expo and shared that soon freshmen will be making their class schedules for the next school year and will be choosing a career pathway. By learning about career opportunities in the region, Hancock says students will be more informed before they select a career pathway.
Following last year’s expo, Hancock says they surveyed the freshmen who attended and found that around 27% of them changed their career pathways because of their experience at the expo.
Hancock calls the expo a career highlight because students have a vital opportunity to discover their career aspirations while also connecting with members of the community. Hancock says the expo would not be possible without the community’s support.
Christian County High School Freshman, Austin Outland says the expo was cool and gravitated toward the agriculture exhibits.
After he graduates, Outland says he plans to pursue a career in row crop farming.
