HHS’s Cansler picks up Region championship

Hopkinsville High School junior Grace Cansler was the top finisher for the Lady Tigers’ swim team Saturday at the Region 1 Swim Meet at the Rick Cohn Aquatic Center.

Cansler won her second straight region championship in the 100-yard Breaststroke, edging Murray’s Tatum Faulkner with a time of 1:15.23.

The Hoptown junior automatically qualifies for the Semi-State Meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 8 at Bowling Green High School.

Cansler also finished fifth in the 100-yard Freestyle event. Saralynn Major was seventh in 1:06.80 and Kaydon Coats was ninth in 1:09.15.

The top two qualifiers in each event automatically qualify for the next round of swimming.

The Lady Tigers’ Kaley Bangart took third place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:38.18.

Bangart and Cansler also were part of the Lady Tigers’ 200-yard freestyle relay team that took third place in 2:03.59. Major and Eliza Renshaw made up the rest of the relay team.

Third-place finishers could still make the next round based on their times compared to other times from the other regions.

Hoptown’s girls’ 200-yard medley relay team of Bangart, Cansler, Renshaw, and Major also finished fifth with a time of 2:17.28.

Other top 10 finishers for Hopkinsville included Major and Evelyn Bangart, who finished seventh and ninth, respectively in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 2:27.49 and 2:44.60.

Renshaw finished eighth, Coats was ninth and Kaley Bangart was 10th in the 50-yard freestyle, respectively. Renshaw finished in 31.23 seconds. Coats touched the wall in 31.30 and Bangart had a time of 31.41.

The Lady Tigers’ Renshaw was sixth in the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:24.76.

Murray won the Girls’ Region 1 championship with 422 points, followed by Fort Campbell with 261. Henderson County was third with 235 and Madisonville-North Hopkins finished fourth at 228. Hopkinsville was fifth with 197.
