The Christian County Lady Colonels and their fans held their breath as the Lady Colonels’ star forward Ne’Vaeh Day was helped off the floor at halftime and reappeared out of the locker room with crutches.
But that was the only thing that scared the Lady Colonels Friday night as they swept the season girls’ basketball series from cross-town rival Hopkinsville 57-37 at Lyle Dunbar Gym. The Lady Colonels won 68-29 in Tiger Gym two weeks ago.
Christian County Coach Kiki Radford said after the game that Day, who leads the team in scoring (16.9 points) and rebounds (11), suffered a slight sprained ankle and could have played if needed in the second half. However, with Christian County in control most of the way, Radford kept her star out.
Behind the play of junior guard Anaysia Bagwell, who hit five 3-pointers on the way to a 17-point performance, Day was safe on the bench.
The two teams were cold from the floor in the first quarter as the Lady Colonels (13-8) grabbed a 9-5 lead. However, Bagwell hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter and helped Christian County push its lead to 26-12 at the break.
Senior Lazarie Daniel got hot in the second half. The Lady Colonels’ forward pumped in all 11 of her points in the second half. DEbony Anderson had seven points in the third quarter and Christian County opened up a 42-19 lead entering the final quarter.
Hopkinsville’s offense struggled most of the night as one of the Lady Tigers’ leading scorers, LaShanti Wilson was held scoreless in the first half. Leading scorer Alicia Davis was held to only three points and Lee Love, who averages double figures, also was held to four points in the first half.
Wilson got hot in the second half, scoring all 12 of her points to lead Hoptown (6-8). Love finished with nine points.
Both teams cleared the benches late in the game and fans had a chance to get a look at what the consolidated school team could look like a two years as several freshman and eighth graders were in the game.
Hopkinsville is scheduled to play Henderson County on Monday night. Christian County returns to action Monday night in a District 8 game at Fort Campbell.
