Lady Colonels be-Deviled in overtime

For nearly four quarters, the Christian County Lady Colonels had visiting Owensboro right where they wanted them.

But then it went south.

Senior guard Shalyn Sprinkles had 37 points, 27 of those in the second half and overtime and helped the Lady Devils rally for a 64-61 overtime win over Christian County Saturday afternoon in a girls’ high school basketball game.

Christian County led for most of the game and had a 42-31 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

However, the Lady Colonels struggled against the Lady Devils’ pressure defense and Sprinkles got going and helped Owensboro take a four point lead late in the game.

However, Christian County cut the lead to 52-51 and fouled Unique Carter-Swanagan. The junior guard missed both free throws and the Lady Colonels’ Na’Vaeh Day rebounded and drove the length of the floor and was fouled.

The senior forward missed her first free throw, but made the second with 4.6 seconds left and sent the game into overtime at 52-52.

Sprinkles took over during the extra period. She hit a 3-pointer and converted her free throws down the stretch and the Lady Devils were able to pull away for the 64-61 win.

Day led Christian County (9-8) with 23 points. Anaysia Bagwell had 22. Daniya Bradley also had a big game for the Lady Colonels with nine points.

Owensboro won for the fourth time in five outings and improved to 8-4 on the season.
