Mild weather to start this week, then icy temperatures bring a chance of wintry weather

This week is looking to be fairly quiet and calm weather wise—but then next week could bring a big, wintry change to the area.

This week will start with mild temperatures, and Meteorologist David Witten with the National Weather Service in Paducah says there will linger some chances for rain throughout the week, before temperatures begin to dip.

And they’ll do more than dip—temperatures are set to downright plummet, bringing a shocking wave of cold air to the region, with Witten saying it’s not out of the question that we could see temperatures near zero, and windchill bringing it down even further.

The rest of this week looks to stay pretty dry, but then a new weather system moves in Saturday night into Sunday, and it’s already got people abuzz with the possibility of snow and ice. Witten says there is a lot left to determine, but the biggest thing they’re waiting to learn is where that system will track into the region, because how far north it goes will decide our precipitation.

Witten says their confidence on the forecast is low right now, with so much subject to change over the next few days, but right now, it’s looking like sleet and freezing rain could be the most likely outcome in our area.

With so much up in the air in the way of forecast details, make sure you stay weather aware as we head towards the weekend and the potential of wintry weather. Stay tuned to the WHOP Family of Stations for any advisories and weather updates.
